so Arielle, how did you spend your weekend?

i spent it in the dark with a large man and an even bigger..... opinion. :-)

seriously, i spent the entire day yesterday, ok well it was more like 5.5 hours but who's counting? in a darkened theatre with this guy Mike Daisey -- http://www.mikedaisey.com/.

He covered 4 men of mythological magnificence in 4 solo monologues in his show called Great Men of Genius (or GMOG -- rawr!!) He topples and tussles with the personalities of Brecht, Barnum, Tesla and utlimately Hubbard, yes the man behind dianetics. i am not a moonlighting theatre reviewer i am merely an amused and grateful audience member.

Mike is hilarious in a way that I like. He doesn't just make profound observations about these dead famous guys, he makes profound observations about them as they relate to *him*, Mr. Mike Daisey, the Duke of Dorky. Mike is a frankenstein of comedy himself weaving in Eddie Izzard'ish snarky remarks with Lewis Black's ranting and spitting. Pay particular attention to his apt descriptions of state fairs, science fairs, Star Trek, and ears on a string.

Don't trust me. Don't believe me. Don't take my word for it. Take it in for yourself. Check out his act at Berkeley Rep (http://www.berkeleyrep.org/ticketing/calendar/index.aspx). You'll get to see them parsed and spaced neatly over 4 days instead of smooshed into one crazy day in the dark.

    <lj:music>Breakdown - Frou Frou</lj:music>

I am desperately seeking models for tomorrow's Hotties of Harm Reduction photo shoot. We do not have enough to fulfill the photographer's vision of "AN Army of Queers". We have 6 confirmed people, hardly enough to even ruffle the feathers of seasons revolutionaries.

does anyone else know anyone else who'd be willing to show up at 6AM in the name of harm reduction and clean needle exchange? if so please tell them about this.

here's what i posted on tribe:
Will You Model for me PLEASE?! friends only Sat, July 29, 2006 - 2:10 PM
Model for me and the calendar I am working on.

The calendar is called the Hotties of Harm Reduction. It is a fundraiser for clean needle exchange and HIV reduction strategies here in the city. You can read more about it here: www.hottiesofharmreduction.org/

The plan is to have an "army" of folks marching up Castro tomorrow morning at 6am (yes that is in the am but is before the marathon and before Dore Alley!). Folks would be dressed in tighy whiteys, combat boots and aviator sunglasses (we will provide if you don't have said items!). With the people assembled in military formation the Castro theatre marquee in the background will display the message "CLEAN NEEDLES SAVE LIVES". No one will be completely naked. All body shapes are welcome and DESIRED. Electrical tape will be provided to cover exposed bits etc.

I know that this is last minute. I know that this is a risque and strange request. I know it is super early. I know that I am doing this in a non-personal manner. I know all of these things and yet I am asking for your help to make this shot a really amazing message. Please email me and tell me the news - be it yes, no, maybe or you bloody insane lady go back to smoking crack. I am prepared for the inevitable a rejection from you all but maybe one or two of you will surprise and delight me and actually show up. a grrl can dream right?

Feel free to pass this request on or re-post it elsewhere (just NOT craigslist, i beseech you!) to people you think would be supportive of such a fundraiser.

thank you for reading this
many hugs
arielle

Val (childewolfe) and company are still hard at work doing the post-production/editing. it was great fun to romp through Stern Grove today and be a production assistant/slate grrl. making a movie is hard work and but the end product is really going to be an amazing piece.

you can see it this thursday night at Studio Z. learn more here: Tied to the Mast Productions
www.tiedtothemast.com

SCREENING DETAILS

Tuesday through Thursday, June 27, 28, and 29
Screenings are at the Roxie Cinema http://www.roxie.com
3117 16th Street (at Valencia Street) in San Francisco's Mission district

NOTE: Each night's whole set of films shows TWICE: First show at 7:00, the 2nd at 9:30

See you at the show!

John & I returned late from our vacation to Vancouver. We boarded the cruise ship last Thursday and set sail for Canada that afternoon. We spent 3 wonderful days at sea, lulled and rocked by the currents.

Vancouver was amazing!!! The sun was out and not a cloud in the sky...too glorious. We walked all over the city acquainting ourselves with the kinkier and more outrageous shops along Davie Street (think Castro & Haight Street but much cleaner).

We crashed that night and woke up at 4:30 on Monday to board a bus from Vancouver to Seattle. The trip was uneventful if not blurry through my sleep phased eyes. We got on an Amtrak train in Seattle at 10:30 and were off to Emeryville. Taking a train was incredibly delightful... seeing so much of the pacific northwest from the privacy and quiet of our own little cabin was absolutely perfect.

Too tired right now but more details (and pics!) to come in the next few days

<lj:music>"Fiddler on the Roof" soundtrack on vinyl ^_^</lj:music>

now when i am feeling low and slimy and my stomach hurts i found this Rumi poem on tribe from someone who found it in the collection translated by Coleman Barks:

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don't open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

I would love to kiss you.
The price of kissing is your life.

Now my loving is running to my life shouting,
What a bargain, let's buy it.

Daylight, full of small dancing particles
and the one great turning, our souls
are dancing with you, without feet, they dance.
Can you see them when I whisper in your ear?

They try to say what you are, spiritual or sexual?
They wonder about Solomon and all his wives.

In the body of the world, they say, there is a soul
and you are that.

But we have ways within each other
that will never be said by anyone.
Come to the orchard in Spring.
There is light and wine, and sweethearts in the pomegranate flowers.

If you do not come, these do not matter.
If you do come, these do not matter.

<lj:music>X - When Our Love Passed Out on the Couch</lj:music>

"Sleep is the new Sex. Everyone wants it, everyone needs it, everybody can't get enough of it...."

Yahwuhl! This is so true. It seems that more and more at school I hear folks talking about their lack of sleep and complaining about that. Not much talk of not getting any... very intriguing. For me its true. When I don't get sex I get crabby. When I don't get sleep I get depressed and doomsday-ish which leads to even less sex. Our ancestors, Lucy the first bi-ped and her clans were asleep within a few hours of the sun setting and up at dawn to track and hunt animals. Maybe being a hunter/gatherer wasn't such a bad life after all?

Here's some more info about the guy who said the quote:

"Sleep is the new sex.” So says psychologist Arthur J. Spielman, associate director of the Center for Sleep Disorders Medicine & Research at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. “People want it, need it, can’t get enough of it.” The same could be said of profits. Spielman is coauthor of The Insomnia Answer ($24, Perigee Books, 2006). He is also developing light-delivering goggles that are supposed to help people reset the circadian rhythms that govern when they nod off and wake up, so they fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
